The History Of Hounslow Crossroads
Hounslow Crossroads affiliates to the Crossroads Association, the national organisation which, with over 200 schemes across the country, is the leading provider of home-based respite to Carers in England and Wales in the voluntary sector.
The Crossroads Association was formed in 1973 after a storyline in the soap Crossroads featuring a man being cared for by his mother at home. Following the huge response to the story, the television company ATV donated £10,000 to develop a practical support service for Carers. The first scheme, based in Rugby, employed 5 care staff and helped 28 families. Today, Crossroads is an association of more than 200 schemes, supporting over 34,000 families providing over 4.5 million care hours per year.
Hounslow Crossroads is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and was established in 1993 to provide 150 care hours per week to Carers living the London Borough of Hounslow. The Scheme now provides over 20,000 care hours per year.
The Scheme is currently funded by the Hounslow Primary Care Trust and Hounslow Social Services to provide short periods of respite care to Carers who look after people with any disability or illness.
